چکیده

Physical, chemical, biochemical and microbial properties of riparian soils beneath native scmb (Leptospermum scoparium), grazed pasture, and set-aside pasture along the edge of a third order stream near Taupo, New Zealand were compared. In the 12 years since retirement from grazing, dominant vegetation in the set-aside areas changed from pasture grasses to native tussock (Poa cita). Riparian set-aside soils had an extremely high hydraulic conductivity in the surface horizon (6340 mm h -L) compared with that in the riparian grazed pasture ( 15 mm h-1) indicating that surface runoff water transported into the zone would infiltrate, fill soil pores and emerge as subsurface flow at the stream edge. Phosphorus available for transport was highest in riparian set-aside soils, indicating P saturation of the zone. Nitrate pool size was strongly correlated to nitrifying potential ( Spearman' s p = 0.897), with both being extremely low in riparian set-aside. Microbial biomass was greater in riparian set-aside ( 1900 mg C g 1 ) than riparian native ( 1460 mg C gt ) or riparian pasture ( 1080 mg C g~ ). The results imply that riparian set-aside has led to the development of a zone likely to supply runoff to the adjacent stream that is depleted in sediment-bound nutrients and dissolved N but enriched in dissolved P.

USDA Conservation Practices Increase Carbon Storage and Water Quality Improvement Functions: An Example from Ohio

We compared potential denitrification and phosphorus (P) sorption in restored depressional wetlands, restored riparian buffers, and natural riparian buffers of central Ohio to determine to what extent systems restored under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wetland Reserve Program (WRP) and Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) provide water quality improvement benefits, and to determine which ...

Finite Element Simulation of Total Nitrogen Transport in Riparian Buffer in an Agricultural Watershed

Riparian buffers can influence water quality in downstream lakes or rivers by buffering non-point source pollution in upstream agricultural fields. With increasing nitrogen (N) pollution in small agricultural watersheds, a major function of riparian buffers is to retain N in the soil. A series of field experiments were conducted to monitor pollutant transport in riparian buffers of small waters...

Relationships Between Landscape Features and Nutrient Concentrations in an Agricultural Watershed in Southwestern Georgia: An Integrated Geographic Information Systems Approach

This study examined the influence of landscape features on stream nutrient concentrations within the Ichawaynochaway Creek watershed in southwestern Georgia. Baseflow concentrations of both dissolved (SRP, NO3, NH4) and total (TN, TP) nutrients were measured at 17 sampling sites monthly for a period of six months (July 2012 to January 2013). A long-term dataset (January 2008 to March 2012) was ...

Process - Based Stream - Riparian Modeling System to Assess Stream

This paper describes a comprehensive stream-riparian modeling system to evaluate the effects of channel-riparian zones on stream Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). Nonpoint source pollutants emanating from agricultural fields are major contributors to the ecological impairment of stream channels. Nutrients and sediments are the principle sources of surface water impairment. The edge-of-field sy...
